CELEBRITY HAIR STYLIST: SCOTT KING
Scott King's obsession with hair began before he could talk. After completing his training through Washington DC's Graham Webb Academy, he worked at one of the city's top salons before moving to Los Angeles in 2011.
Known for his chic and effortless approach to cutting and styling hair, Scott's work has been featured in editorial shoots, advertising campaigns, and music videos, as well as on the red carpet.
With a loyal celebrity clientele list including Sabrina Carpenter, Becky G, and Bailee Madison, Scott continues to make his signature mark on the industry.
Amuze caught up with the in-demand hair stylist to talk all things grooming, his can't-live-without-these hair products, and how fashion plays an important role in the creation of statement looks.
How did you get your start in the hair styling business and why did you decide to pursue it as a full time career?
I played with hair before I could even form a sentence! My mom told me I should pursue hair styling because I was good at it so she sent me to hair school in Washington, DC after I graduated high school. I worked in DC for six years and then moved to Los Angeles at the end of 2012.
What’s the hair style you’re most well known for?
Loose, effortless waves.
How would you describe your personal grooming style?
Low key and relaxed. I dress mostly for comfort. I never shave my beard (I only trim it every two to three weeks). As for my hair, I love my natural curl so I usually throw in a curl cream and some oil and let my hair air dry. Easy!
What do you like to splurge on?
A good quality candle. I always have one lit at home.
What inspires you to create statement hair looks for your celebrity clients?
It’s all about the fashion. I always like to see what my clients will be wearing before I start styling their hair.
What has been the most surreal moment for you?
The two most surreal moments for me both happened pretty recently! First, being the guest hair stylist on E! News's FreeSTYLE Facebook. So many people were tuning in and asking questions! I was demonstrating two looks (tousled tresses and a party pony) on Bachelor alum, Vanessa Grimaldi. It was an amazing experience. In addition, I was also on a recent episode of Revenge Body with Khloé Kardashian where I had the opportunity to makeover one of the male contestants. When it was time for him to reveal himself to his friends and family, he also took the opportunity to come out on national television, and to be a part of that journey for him was just really special.

Who was your first celebrity client and how did you land him/her?
Paula Abdul, which is INSANE to me because she has always been such an icon of mine! One of my clients who knows her referred her to me. She’s a sweetheart.
If you could only use one hair product for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Oribe’s Dry Texture spray. In my opinion, it is the best finishing product on the market. It’s like a dry shampoo and a hairspray mixed together.
What are the three tools in your hair kit that you just can’t live without?
My Dyson Hair Dryer, my Harry Josh Marcel curling iron, and my FHI flat iron.
What is your current hair styling obsession?
A soft, clean, bouncy blowout. And a high textured ponytail.
What was your first job?
A cashier at my family’s pharmacy. I was 13!
Best hair tip?
Take hair vitamins to keep locks healthy from the inside out.
Do you have a secret hair how-to tip for us?
When creating undone waves, alternate the direction of your curl and leave the ends out so it has an effortless vibe to it. Then, brush out the hair with your fingers and finish with a texturizing spray.
Do you have any hobbies?
Relaxing with a good book! I am also a pretty good cook and I love preparing meals for my friends. I also watch a lot of TV. And I recently invested in a record player so I love scouring record stores for great finds.
What's your favorite product in your kit?
My Oribe Dry Texture spray or Ouai Finishing Cream.
Who's your style icon?
David Beckham because he dresses with comfort in mind and he looks super sharp as well. Basically, he looks hot either way! Also Blake Lively because she always looks stunning.
What's the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
Be nice and respectful to those around you because that is what people will remember you for.
What is one thing our readers would be surprised to hear?
I was a springboard diver for ten years!
If you could style the hair of one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
It would have to be Brigitte Bardot. Her hair styles were iconic.
