Aliana Lopez is a Mexican-American make-up artist who, in 2011, took a leap of faith and moved to New York City to pursue her dreams.

Working her way through internships and freelance gigs, Aliana soon landed a job as the assistant to international make-up artist, Wendy Rowe. Working with some of the world’s most renowned photographers, stylists, and models, Aliana also had the opportunity of working with some of the most sought after celebrities. A few years on and Aliana's applying her skills to fashion and advertising campaigns, red carpets, and beauty shoots alike.

Amuze caught up with the gorgeous artist to discuss all things undetectable contouring, her fave products, and how to make lips look pouty and voluptuous!

How did you get your start in the celebrity make-up artistry business and why did you decide to pursue it as a full time career?
I moved to New York six years ago but had no contacts in the fashion industry. I would send email after email to agencies and artists looking for any opportunities to assist, but received few responses. One day, an internship opportunity became available at an amazing boutique agency called Tim Howard Management - who at the time represented some of the industry’s most prominent artists. I jumped on the opportunity and worked for eight months pulling tears, doing filing work, updating artist books, and doing anything and everything around the office to be helpful and seen. Through that internship I gained some amazing relationships and landed a first assistant position to international makeup artist, Wendy Rowe. Ever since, she has been the most amazing mentor and has helped shape me into the artist I am today. It was through her that I had the opportunity to work with Sienna Miller. One booking turned into two which turned into three and I’ve now had the opportunity of working with Sienna several times!

Being a make-up artist is a blessing in itself, but I came to find that I really loved working with celebrities as opposed to working strictly in fashion. It’s so fun to be able to learn your clients’ face and features and be able to play with looks every time you work with them.

What’s the make-up aesthetic you’re most well known for?
I would say I’m know for my ‘lit from within’ skin and undetectable contouring. I love enhancing my clients’ features. It keeps everyone guessing as to why they look so amazing!

How would you describe your personal make-up style?
I’m a California girl so my style will always be low maintenance, and the same goes for my make-up style. I’m a lover of skincare, a good brow, and curled lashes. When I’m feeling fancy I’ll throw some contouring into the mix.

What do you like to splurge on?
Cashmere! I love it and it’s a necessity when you live on the East Coast.

What inspires you to create statement make-up looks for your celebrity clients?
Fashion will always determine which way to go with a beauty look. It should all feel cohesive.

If you could only use one make-up brand for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Burberry Beauty. I was there for the whole revamping and reformulating that Wendy Rowe was a part of as the creative consultant for the brand. You cannot go wrong with having any Burberry products in your make-up rotation. They are all so amazing!

What are the three tools in your make-up kit that you can’t live without?
My Shu Uemura eyelash curler, Burberry’s contour pen, and Glossier’s Super Bounce serum.

What is your current make-up obsession?
NAICARI Beauty is a line I’m falling in love with. They are quite new to the make-up game and currently only have a range of powder products and a primer. But the quality is superb and it’s made in Italy. Try the highlighters and contours, you’ll be blown away!

What has been the most surreal moment for you?

My whole make-up journey has been surreal. I appreciate all the time every one of my clients has given me and I appreciate being able to live in New York City, doing something I love and really making a name for myself. But when Emily Weiss (the founder of the cosmetics company Glossier and its blog, Into the Gloss) slid into my direct messages, that was pretty epic! And the rest, as they say, is history.

What was your first job?
The first job I interviewed for was a position in a law firm’s copy center. I sent and received faxes!

Best make-up tip?
Curl your eyelashes.

What is your must-have beauty product?
Burberry’s Earthy blush. It’s the best for subtle contouring.

Do you have a secret make-up how-to tip for us?
Yes - lip contouring! It’s a way to make your lips look pouty and more voluptuous. I use Burberry’s contour pen on bare lips and shade on the inner corners of the lips, top and bottom, and also under the bottom lip. Then, follow with a nude liner around the top and bottom lips. Fill with your favorite lipstick or lip balm. I do this technique all the time with my clients!

What's your favorite product in your make-up kit?
Currently, it’s my NAICARI highlighters.

Can you describe your style in just three words?
Unfussy. Imperfect. Real.

Who's your style icon?
Cher.

What's the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
Always learn from your mistakes to better yourself.

What is one thing our readers would be surprised to hear?
My husband has a dog walking company so the part of my life that’s not consumed with beauty, celebrities, and glamour, is filled with lots and lots of dogs…such a dream, I know!

If you could paint one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Cher! She is my ultimate dream face to work with. She’s fearless and so beautiful, so anything you do on her would be major.

Favorite quote?
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
