Katie Danza grew up in Los Angeles and has always been fascinated by the glamorous world of entertainment. She began her career working for Rachel Zoe at The Zoe Report and became the beauty editor for the online publication. Now, Katie is a freelance makeup artist and has worked with brands such as Luv Aj, Stone Cold Fox, Chan Luu, Cotton Citizen, Guess, and Coach.

Amuze caught up with the stunning make-up artist to chat all things glamour and style!

How did you get your start in the make-up artistry business and why did you decide to pursue it as a full time career?

I have been obsessed with makeup for as long as I can remember, but I never really thought it could actually be my career.  After college I was working for Rachel Zoe as her beauty editor and when I left a couple of friends of mine hired me to do the makeup for the lookbooks for their lines and then it dawned on me that I could actually do this for a living. I haven’t stopped since.

What’s the make-up aesthetic you’re most well known for?
Natural and glowy.  My main goal is enhancing the beauty that is already there, not covering anything up or changing anything.

How would you describe your personal make-up style?
I never like to look like I’m wearing a ton of makeup but I love experimenting with different colors and textures.  And I love a glitter eye for night time!

What do you like to splurge on?
Shoes, bags, skincare, clothes…..everything?!

What inspires you to create statement make-up looks for your celebrity clients?
I get inspired by nature a lot - the colors of flowers, the ocean, etc.  Also just following the work of other artists is a great way to spark inspiration.  I never want to copy but I like to think about how I can apply their ideas to my own work.

What has been the most surreal moment for you?
A client of mine recently walked the red carpet at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party.  I am obsessed with that makeup and how glamorous everyone always looks, so it was very exciting to finally play a part in it.

Who was your first celebrity client and how did you land him/her?
My first celebrity client was Diana Agron.  She’s a friend of mine so it came about pretty naturally, but I was thrilled!

Fave make-up brand and why?
Right now it’s Fenty Beauty.  I love anything Rihanna does but the products are really amazing and the quality is top notch.

What are the three tools in your make up kit that you just can’t live without?
Skindinavia setting spray - I use it before during and after application and it really makes the makeup hold. I get these extremely small and tight Q-tips from Muji whenever I’m at JFK airport.  They are the best for cleaning up eye makeup, especially liquid liner. A damp Beauty Blender. It makes everything blend seamlessly - but it has to be damp!

What is your current make-up obsession?
Chanel recently came out with this lip balm/powder duo called the POUDRE À LÈVRES. It gives lips the coolest stained look and you can intensify the pigment as much as you want.  I can’t stop using it.

What was your first job?
I worked as an intern at The Zoe Report for Rachel Zoe right out of college, and worked my way up to ultimately becoming the Beauty Editor.

What is your must-have beauty product?
Personally, it’s an eyelash curler.  My eyelashes are stick straight so it really changes my whole face when I curl them. Also La Mer moisturizer.

Do you have a secret make-up how-to tip for us?
I’m a big fan of using hair gel instead of brow gel - it doesn’t flake as much and really holds.

Do you have any hobbies?
I love to work out…pilates mostly. And I love to cook!  But at the end of the day I just want to spend time with my friends any chance I have - they're my hobby.

What's your favorite product in your make-up kit?
Probably my Pat McGrath eye kits.  They are so much fun - I love to use them and create intense, metallic looks.

Who's your style icon?
Rihanna, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Dua Lipa, Diane Kruger.

What's the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
To stay focused on myself and my own goals and give up on the timeline.  We put so much pressure on ourselves trying to reach these made up deadlines and they just don’t matter.  Letting go and working hard will make things happen when they're supposed to.

What is one thing our readers would be surprised to hear?
I’m obsessed with the ocean, especially whales and dolphins.  They're all over my house and I even have one tattooed on my foot.  It’s cute I swear! I grew up on the beach in Malibu so I feel very connected to them.

If you could paint one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Honestly probably Rosie Huntington Whiteley.  Her face is just so spectacular.

Favorite quote?
It is much harder to be mean than it is to be kind.

The Quick 5:

Iced coffee or Iced tea?
Iced green tea

Movie night in or night out with the girls?
Night out with the girls!

Matte lip or glossy lip?

Bold brows - yay or nay?

Heels or flats?
Heels. I always wear flats to work but I really don’t feel like myself until I’m in a very high heel.
