Caitlin 'Cat' Pope is an Australian expat living in New York. Working as a fashion stylist and consultant, Cat comes to the States with extensive experience working in the fashion departments of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar Australia.

Having also worked with renowned celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger, Cat's making her mark on the red carpet one celeb at a time!

Amuze caught up with the Aussie native to chat all things fash-un including her vibrant style aesthetic, why comfort is key, and her must-have purchase for summer.

Tell us about you got started in the celebrity styling business and why you decided to pursue styling as a full time career…
During college, a friend of mine couldn’t make her internship at a fashion magazine one day a week, so she asked me to cover for so as not to let them down. Two minutes in I was hooked and loved being there. I then interned at different magazines all throughout my college years and scored a job at a magazine once I graduated. When I relocated to New York from Sydney, Australia, I landed a job in celebrity styling with a prominent stylist. Now I have my own business and clients. I love working with a wide range of creative people, traveling, and being able to help curate a personal brand or image for my clients.

What’s your style aesthetic?
Vibrant yet sophisticated. I appreciate femininity with a polished approach and I always want my clients to stand out in a room.

How would you describe your personal style?
Laid back. Comfort is important to me. I tend to wear a lot of black but try to have one really special or interesting piece in each outfit.

What do you splurge on?
I tend to splurge on quality items that will last me a long time and that I know I'll get a lot of wear out of: like a leather jacket or a cashmere sweater. High quality staples always make me look put-together with minimal effort so that I can focus on my clients. My friends are always asking me about my capsule wardrobe tips and I'm trying to convert them all!

What inspires you to create looks for your celebrity clientele?
The clients themselves! We always have a great chat before the fitting so I can get a feel for their vibe. I also always try to dig out something new and exciting to share with them so we always have fun at the fittings.

What has been the most surreal moment for you in your styling career?
Anything to do with the Oscars is a dream come true. Coming from Australia and working on clients’ looks for the Oscars over the years never gets old.

Who was your first celebrity client and how did you land him/her?
Marian Hill (band) were my first celebrity clients. They are some of the most amazing and talented people in music right now. We did looks for their performances, press appearances, and music videos. It was lots of fun. I scored them as clients through a close friend in the industry who was managing them at the time. I’m forever grateful to her for giving me the chance to work with them. It changed my life!

If you could only live in one designer’s clothing for the rest of your life, who would it be and why?
I’d live in Proenza Schouler.  I love every collection and every piece they create. Everything they make is the perfect mix of sophistication and playfulness for me.

Favorite fashion magazine?
Vogue Paris.

What are some of your current fashion obsessions?
Currently I want everyone to wear red all of the time. I also love any oversized 80s blazers with mini skirts.

What’s one fashion trend you’d never wear?
I don’t think I could wear a bold 80s colorful suit. There are so many around now and I love them for my clients, but I’m too short!

What was your first job?
I worked in a restaurant.

Best fashion tip?
Before you leave the house review your outfit and take one thing off. Less is more.

What is your must-have beauty product?
I’m really into beauty and taking really good care of my skin so I would say sunscreen. It’s a must.

Do you have a secret make-up tip?
I think people underestimate a primer. I love Clarins Beauty Flash Balm.

Do you have any hobbies?
I used to draw fashion illustrations as a hobby, but not so much now. I should pick that back up!

What's your favorite piece of clothing in your wardrobe?
My Veda leather motorcycle jacket.

Can you describe your style in three words?
Polished, modern, effortless.

Who's your style icon?
Carine Roitfeld is everything.

What's the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
Always be prepared.

Favorite Quote?
Elegance is refusal.

What is one thing our readers would be surprised to hear?
I own a store in Australia called The Bridesmaid Studio.

If you could style one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
David Bowie! It would be such a fun and magical experience.

One thing you’re going to buy to update your summer wardrobe?
I’m definitely going to buy some colorful and bright mules to pair with every outfit.
