CELEBRITY STYLIST: VICTOR BLANCO
Victor Blanco is a celebrity stylist, consultant and fashion expert who has worked in the industry for more than ten years.
Originally from Barcelona, Spain, and now residing in Los Angeles, California, he has dressed world-renowned Spanish models Isabeli Fontana and Nieves Álvarez, singer Nicole Scherzinger, and American actresses Bellamy Young (Scandal), Beth Dover (Orange Is The New Black), and Amanda Brugel (The Handmaid’s Tale), among a slew of others.
From humble beginnings working in fashion retail to styling the looks of Hollywood’s glamour girls, Victor continues to ride the wave of his success.
Amuze.com caught up with the Spanish native to discuss all things style, the most surreal moment in his career thus far, and how he’s adjusting to West Coast life.
How did you get started in the celebrity styling business and what made you decide to pursue it as a full time career?
When I was 18 I started working in retail for high-fashion brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Bally, Montblanc, and Prada. Over the years, I naturally began to establish myself as a fashion stylist. The truth is, I always loved styling my mum and best friend, and I was very good at selling to and interacting with clients at the stores. Melding those two passions brought me to where I am today.
What’s your style aesthetic?
I’m all about the glamour! I love high-end brands. I love refined and feminine but also sexy and seductive. When it comes to my clients, I like to polish their own style and add my dose of fabulous fashion flair. At the end of the day, we’re a team.
How would you describe your personal style?
Now that I live in Los Angeles — which has a much warmer climate than Barcelona, Spain, where I grew up and lived for many years — my day-to-day style has evolved into wearing more casual clothes like All Saints and Rag & Bone. Sandro Paris and Saint Laurent are also favorites of mine.
What do you splurge on?
Shoes! I just bought two Gucci pairs!
What has been the most surreal moment for you?
Everytime I do the Cannes Film Festival is an absolute dream. In Spain, we have los Premios Goya (basically the Spanish Oscars) known as The Goya Awards. When I worked with my client Nieves Álvarez and dressed her in Stéphane Rolland for one of the award ceremonies, that was one of the most important moments in my career. I cried.
If you could only live in one designer’s clothing for the rest of your life, who would it be and why?
Saint Laurent. And if I was super super rich, Tom Ford. For everyday and chic moments, YSL is great. And then Tom Ford is so chic and elegant. I would love to be a dandy when I’m a bit older!
What is your current fashion obsession?
Christian Louboutin shoes for men. Also anything from YSL and GUCCI.
Who was your first celebrity client and how did you land him/her?
In LA, some of my first clients were Beth Dover who plays Linda Ferguson on Orange Is The New Black, and singer Nicole Scherzinger. Having a great agent in a big city is so important. Having trust in them to secure me amazing jobs and opportunities is something I am so grateful for.
What’s one trend you’d never wear?
I’ve learned to "never say never.” I always said: “I’ll never will wear sweat clothes.” Jokes on me because I wear them every day!
What was your first job in the fashion industry?
With Dolce & Gabbana in Barcelona as a Store Sales Associate and Visual Merchandiser. I loved it.
What’s your best fashion tip?
Be true to yourself and look your best — even in casual clothes. Sometimes less is better.
What’s your must-have beauty product?
I love Natura Bisse products for beauty. For hair care I swear by GHD, especially their blowdryer.
Do you have a secret fashion tip?
I dream all of my looks before they happen.
What does a typical day in the life look like for Victor Blanco?
It really depends on the day, whether I have fittings or jobs I’m organizing. If I have a free moment I love to walk, sleep, and eat crepes.
What's your single most favorite item of clothing in your wardrobe?
My turquoise glitter Gucci sneakers and my Louboutin sneakers with spikes.
Who's your style icon?
Tom Ford, always and forever.
What's the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
Be nice, kind, educated, and grateful. My client, Nieves Álvarez, taught me that.
If you could style one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
My parents. I unfortunately lost my mom ten years ago and my dad passed away in 2015. I used to dress my dad frequently. He loved fashion and we were the same size so he was always great to style.
THE QUICK FIVE:
Netflix or Hulu?
Both! But I watch Netflix more.
Barcelona or Los Angeles?
Paella or pasta?
Sweet or sour?
Snow or sunshine?
Snow. I can’t deal with all the hot LA weather. I need a bit of rain or clouds once in a while!
