Meet Adylia Gutierrez, the creative businesswoman behind the leather-goods company, Adees Co.

Founded on tradition with a modern approach to design in mind, Adylia has successfully rebranded her grandmother’s company.

Amuze caught up with the entrepreneur to talk all things accessories, how she capitalized on a gap in the market, and how history and nature are her biggest creative influences.

Tell us a bit about Adees Co. …
Adees Co. is a leather goods company based on quality, fun, and accessibility. We are an effortlessly cool brand that you’ll love sharing with your friends!

What inspired you to start Adees Co.?
Adees Co. was originally my grandmother's company. When I was 15, I knew the brand lifestyle I wanted to create, but I wasn't sure about the correct avenue or how best to achieve my goal. At university, my International Business professor said, “don’t reinvent the wheel, perfect it.” From that statement I researched and saw a gap in the market that I could fill. I wanted to put a modern spin on tradition.

How did you get into the leather business?
My father. He gave me access after I showed him my business proposal. The first six months were trial and error, being immersed in the leather business, and getting people to take me seriously. It worked out, thankfully, but those six months were a challenge.

What has been the most surreal moment for you thus far?
Working with Danny Simpson (the English professional soccer player)! In the design process I was so adamant on following my template. But his talent blew my mind and how he thought up concepts that complemented my ideas was simply brilliant. I’m super competitive so I didn’t have the best reaction to being showed up! Luckily for me, he’s kind.

What inspires you to create?
Traveling and listening to my friends or customers tell me what they want and need out of my accessories. I’m always striving to be innovative and I want to improve people’s attitudes through their accessories because when a person feels confident, they can achieve anything.

What are some of your favorite fashion brands and why?
Vince - it’s comfortable and understated. Joie - you can throw on any piece and look feminine and casual. And Chloe Gosselin - I just discovered her shoes and am OBSESSED! Her avant-garde styles are so fearless & fun.

Best fashion/accessory tip?
Accessories allow your personality to shine!

What is your must-have beauty product?
Bobbi Brown Downtown Plum Lipstick.

What's your morning beauty ritual?
Quick and efficient! I wash my face with Cetaphil Cleanser, moisturize with Shiseido Moisturizer and REN moisturizer, and I finish with MURAD sunblock.

Do you have a secret beauty tip?
I put vaseline on my eyelashes at night to keep them strong and thick.

Describe a day in the life of Adylia…

I don’t have a typical schedule since I alternate between designing and the business side. What is constant is me checking my emails, getting prepared for meetings, and making sure I have copious amounts of coffee throughout the day!

Can you describe your style in one word?
Timeless.

Who are your style icons?
Eva Longoria Baston, Gisele Bündchen, and my mom.

What's the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
“With confidence, a great lipstick and by dressing for your shape, you can conquer the day.” - Grandma Adylia (the original Adees).

Favorite Quote?
“The whole point of being alive is to evolve into the complete person you were intended to be.” - Oprah

What is one thing our readers would be surprised to hear?

I’m quite soft-spoken and I originally wanted to be a photo journalist.

What accessory in your collection do you wear the most?
The Buckle Backpack! It’s simple and can fit my kindle, wallet, snacks, and Purell.

What do you like to splurge on?
Perfume. I’m obsessed with roses & the scent of oud. I’m always mixing perfumes. I also have a weakness for vintage jewelry.

How do you stay on top of accessory trends?
Traveling, reading, and people watching.

How would you describe your work and your influences?
Unconventional. In design mode, I’m utterly chaotic. But day-to-day I’m tunnel vision and quiet until I get my work done. History and nature are my biggest influences.
